STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE - AIR COMPRESSOR PPM

 OBJECTIVE:

To establish a procedure for Air Compressor PPM activity

POLICY:

The Air Compressor PPM activity shall be carried out to extend compressor life and prevent downtime.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Shift Engineer

PROCEDURE:

Before starting PPM activity below list of precautions required to take.

·        The machine is switched off. Apply LOTO to the breaker.

·        The machine has cooled down.

·        The machine is fully vented, the pressure gauge reads 0 psi.

·        All compressed air consumers are disconnected, and the air outlet valve is open.

Maintain the following minimum distances to the object to be cleaned to prevent damages

to the machine when cleaning with the high-pressure cleaner.

·        Circular section jets: approximately 2.3 ft.

·        Fan jets: approximately 1 ft.

·        Dirt blasters: approximately 1 ft

·        Check Compressor Fluid levels

Most units have sight glasses to check fluid levels. Check level per manufacturer ' s instruction. Top off as needed, but do not overfill.

·        Check for room temperature (Ambient temperature)

Excess heat increases maintenance frequency. Mount a thermometer in the compressor room. Increase ventilation if room temperature exceeds operating limits.

·        Inspect inlet filters.

Inspect and vacuum ambient side of coolers. Frequency depends on ambient dust load.

·        Inspect cooler pre-filters.

If present, inspect and vacuum. Frequency depends on dust load.

·        Inspect for the oil filter.

Required to clean if required.

·        Check Belts and couplers

Inspect belts/couplers for cracks or other signs of wear. Check belt tension monthly and adjust as needed

·        Grease motor bearings

Failing to keep motors properly greased can lead to motor failures

·        Inspect Electric cabinet.

Check the cabinet for dirt/dust and moisture. Vacuum dirt/dust. DISCONNECT FROM POWER SOURCE BEFORE OPENING CABINET.

·        Drain Traps

If present, press the test button to confirm proper operation.

·        Check for duty cycle.

If present, press the test button to confirm proper operation.

·        At any job motto should be safety first.

·        In case of any major problem, inform the Facility Manager immediately.
